Sparkvent is a collaboration between Newcastle’s top medical, mechanical and electrical engineering minds.
This project was started in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the findings published in the Medical Journal of Australia regarding the preparedness of Australia’s hospital system in relation to predicted infection and mortality rate.
The goal of the project is to design and manufacture an effective ventilator, in hopes of stemming the impact of COVID-19 casualties.
What is it?
Sparkvent is a ventilator designed and built with open source components and software.
Does it work?
Short answer – Yes. A prototype has been built and is currently undergoing testing.
Why a ventilator?
Based on findings published by MJA, ventilators are in too short a supply in Australian hospitals. In severe cases of COVID-19, ventilators are required to treat the pneumonia-like symptoms, and can be the difference between life and death for many patients.
